Media - Cassette Recording
Incredible as it may seem, the compact cassette was invented in the 1960s as a speech recording medium rather than a home hi-fi system. It has soldiered on for forty years, and is still widely used as a format of convenience for many varied markets including dance instructors and broadcasters!
Although it’s popularity is on the decline due to Mini Disc and CD recording advances, the format is still very much alive today, with Denon and Sony continuing to produce high quality new cassette players and recorders.
For Aerobics instructors and the like who wish to play pre-recorded material in a “non-stop” way, the cassette format is fine. Also, for people looking to capture sound bites for other purposes such as research and news bulletins etc., then again the format is still viable.
The one considerable downside to the cassette has always been the cumbersome process of quick track selection – for this reason alone DJs and entertainers looking to incorporate pre-recordings into their performance should steer clear of this format and look to the Mini Disc or Compact Disc.
