divX Karaoke – What does it stand for, and what about players and discs for this format?
What is a divX disc? This is the newest and least common of the 4 common formats in Karaoke today, the others being CDG, DVD and VCD. (more on these 3 above.) A divX Karaoke disc is the same size as a regular CD, 120mm. That’s where the similarities end! divX files are created on computers, much alike MP3 files, and then transferred to CDs. Divx is an MPEG4 format. The file size is around 1/4 of DVD MPEG2 files, so it can essentially store more songs or movies than a standard DVD or CDR. Any DVD player capable of playing MPEG4 will play div X discs. Before this transfer process, the audio files are compressed with no perceivable loss in quality. This allows Karaoke discs to be produced which can have 5 to 50 times as many tracks as normal discs. With divX discs, your TV will display the words to the song on your screen and change colour when it is time to sing those lyrics. Whether there are video scenes or movies in the background completely depends on the compiler. Each disc that we sell online is fully described, and this is made clear to you online with each product description. Regular household CD players will not play these discs. PC’s with the appropriate software may be able to, but to reproduce the words on a TV screen generally requires a player with divX compatibility.
So, what about the players for the divX format? There are currently two players that we do which support this new format, and others are sure to follow. A Karaoke divX player is similar to a regular CD player, except that it has an additional chip for reading the graphics and video tracks of a divX disc. In addition, a divX Karaoke Player will usually have a place to plug in a microphone, a key controller to adjust for the singer's key, and an echo control to enhance the singer's voice. It is worth noting that computers with divX compatible CD drives and the appropriate software can also play this format.
How many discs are available on divX and how much do they cost? At the time of writing there are only a handful of pre-recorded divX discs available. These are ranging between 50 and 450 tracks per disc, with a price range between £39 and £249.
How can I tell if the title I’m choosing is a Karaoke divX disc? Once you choose to look at our Karaoke Discs Department, you will see that our navigation maps are quite clear. You will always get a choice of formats as you browse. As a further check, all individual products are fully described when you click on “more information” for them. Another handy tip we can give you is quite simple – all of our divX Karaoke discs have an order code which starts with the letters KX – you can rely on it.
