Which format is best for me – can I mix 'n' match formats?
CDG Over 4,000 titles available on this site, typically costing between £10 and £20 and containing 8 to 15 tracks per disc. Apart from the wide choice of Artist discs and Music Themes, the CDG format is the sharpest producer of discs to cater for the latest Top 40 hits, often before the track has even hit the real BBC charts!
VCD We have several hundred titles available on this site. A typical VCD disc contains between 10 and 15 tracks and costs between £7 and £12. This is a format which is available at a good price, mostly due to the mass production discs from the Far East. The titles on the whole tend to compile the “International” hits i.e. artists who crossover to both the US and the UK, such as Madonna, U2, The Beatles, Elvis and the likes. All decades of UK hits can be found on VCD. The downside is that no-one is producing any really up to date chart titles and the format looks set to be overtaken by DVD which has now started to come down in price.
DVD Going on for a thousand titles on this site now, and rising by the day! Tracklists per disc can range from 10 to 50 songs, and costs can vary between £6 and £35. Having come after CDGs in history, DVDs are still very much the “second” format in the grand scheme of things here in Britain. Many of the US and UK manufacturers are now producing new releases on both CDG and DVD formats and as a result, the choice is continuing to increase, and price continuing to fall as every month passes. In mainland Europe and in Asia, DVD is the predominant format, whilst in the UK and the US, CDG Karaoke remains in the “pole position”. Disc content is generally great, with lots of UK classics and up to date stuff to choose from, although the format still lags behind CDG for the rapid release of Top 40 hits.
divX At the time of writing there are only a handful of pre-recorded divX discs available. These are ranging between 50 and 450 tracks per disc, with a price range between £39 and £249.
Images conclusion: For sheer choice of songs and styles, CDG is the best format for everyone here in the UK. Every player that we sell can play the CDG format, which certainly makes things easier! It is worthwhile taking the time out to think about the player that you buy before anything else. Many players are multi-format, which obviously opens up the door for all discs that are sold. Multi-format players can come in handy if you spot a DVD with a nice feature that you like, or a VCD which is going cheap, or a divX disc that has hundreds of songs on it that you want! Remember that we have staff here to help! Our staff are always happy to answer any questions you might have about our players or formats, either by email at sales@images2.co.uk or by phone at 01506 442111.
