DVD Karaoke – What does it stand for, and what about players and discs for this format?

What does DVD stand for? DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc. This is one of the 4 common formats in Karaoke today, the others being CDG, VCD and divX (more on these 3 above and below.) A DVD Karaoke disc is the same size as a regular CD, 120mm, but can contain many additional “layers” as well as having more storage space than other discs. This allows the format to have a sharper edge on video display, as well as having the potential for extra menus and features. When hooked up to your TV, the vast majority of our DVD discs display a video in the background, with song lyrics imposed over the top. With all of our DVD discs, your TV will display the words to the song on your screen and change colour when it is time to sing those lyrics. If a background video is important to you, you can click on “more information” when you’re looking at our individual discs - this will tell you whether or not the disc has a video recorded.

What about players for the DVD format?
We offer around 10 Karaoke DVD players on this site, and other 10 normal DVD players. Karaoke DVD Players will usually have a place to plug in a microphone, a key controller to adjust for the singer's key, and an echo control to enhance the singer's voice. It is also worth noting that DVD Karaoke discs can be used on the vast majority of household DVD players, Sony Playstations, and computers with DVD drives. Regular CD players will neither read sound or vision from DVDs.

What about discs for the DVD format?
Having come after CDGs in history, DVDs are still very much the “second” format in the grand scheme of things here in Britain. Many of the US and UK manufacturers are now producing new releases on both CDG and DVD formats and as a result, the choice is continuing to increase, and price continuing to fall as every month passes. In mainland Europe, DVD is the predominant format, whilst in the UK and the US, CDG Karaoke remains in the “pole position”. Of the 5,000 or so titles on this site, approx 12% are on the DVD format. This number will soon take over from the VCD share. Disc content is generally great, with lots of UK classics and up to date stuff to choose from, although the format still lags behind CDG for the rapid release of Top 40 hits. Due to the potential of this format, it’s difficult to describe a “typical” DVD disc. Tracklists per disc can range from 10 to 50 songs, and costs can vary between £6 and £35. There are also many DVD package deals available which offer terrific value, as well as giving your collection a great kick-start!

How can I tell if the title I’m choosing is a Karaoke DVD disc? Once you choose to look at our Karaoke Discs Department, you will see that our navigation maps are quite clear. You will always get a choice of formats as you browse. As a further check, all individual products are fully described when you click on “more information” for them. Another handy tip we can give you is quite simple – all of our DVD Karaoke discs have an order code which starts with the letters KD – you can rely on it!
