Karaoke friendly pro twin DJ CD player, ideal for the combined disco and karaoke outfit. Pro Mobile 14 Oct 05 The KCD1000CDG shares the feature set and good looks of the KCD1000, but is also compatible with CDG discs. This is an excellent product as many karaoke machines are not suitable for regular DJ use but this player offers everything described below as well as CDG playback. It is, therefore, ideal for the combined disco and karaoke outfit. The compact machine comprises a 2U controller and matching 2U main unit, both sporting a very stylish tarnished steel look, to which the picture featured here does not do justice. Complimented by a sensible control layout, the overall look does nothing to reveal the budget price. When a disc is entered, it is loaded fairly quickly and the auto cue function removes any silence at the beginning of a track. Playback starts instantly and cueing is nice and simple. Both the play/pause and cue buttons are colour coded, of a good size and while they are not backlit, LED indicators are provided. A very useful new inclusion is a dual search / jog wheel, a feature that wasn't previously included on the entry level KAM twin player. The outer wheel provides variable speed search, while the inner wheel allows pitch bending while in playback mode and frame search when a track is cued. The pitch slider can be set to a range of +/- 8, 12 or 16 percent and pitch bend buttons are also supplied. There is no pitch lock (master tempo) control, but then at this price it is not realistic to expect to find it.
A green backlit display provides all of the information you would expect: track number, pitch setting, and time in minutes, seconds and frames. The time displayed can be set to either the time elapsed for the current track, the time remaining for the current track or the time remaining for the full disc. As you would expect from a DJ CD player, an option is also provided for single track or continuous play. In addition a segment display gives a visual indication of the progress through a track, which then flashes as the track is about to end. Although the emphasis on this machine is a CD player with all the essentials and none of the optional extras, there are two features that are by no means standard for such equipment. Both of which could prove handy for background music slots. Firstly, the program facility allows up to 20 tracks to be preselected, in a specific order, for unattended playback. Secondly, the relay play mode automatically works through two CDs, playing a track from one and then one from the other. It is even possible to combine the two, choosing a collection of tracks from each disc and then leaving the machine to play the programmed sequence alternating between discs for each track; this means that a total of forty tracks can be selected in a specific order and played back without any intervention from the DJ. The loop function is easy to use, though there is a short pause after each playback of the loop before the next one begins. Outputs are provided in the form of standard analogue phone connections, while the connection from main unit to controller is by a single multi-pin cable (supplied). The machine also features fader start connections in the form of 3.5mm mini jack sockets compatible with all of the models in the KAM 19" mixer range. The KCD1000CDG lives up to the official description of DJ 'workhorse'; the combination of looks, features and functionality really does set a president at this very low price. The player will suit new DJs, those looking for a backup machine and anyone who wants a DJ twin CD player that does the job, looks the part and won't break the bank. Specification |
