Where Can I Find Out About the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER)?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, often known as LOLER, came into force on 5 December 1998. These new regulations replaced sector-specific regulations for construction, docks, plant, etc. with a uniform set of requirements for all industries.
LOLER covers lifting equipment, which is defined as any equipment used at work for lifting or lowering loads, including attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it. Accessories such as chains, slings, eyebolds, etc. are also included.
The regulations require that lifting equipment must be:
• strong and stable enough for the particular use;
• used safety, in properly planned and supervised lifting operations; and
• subject to ongoing thorough examination and, where appropriate, inspection by competent people.
